Typography choices that make a layout feel expensive

Two designs can use the same layout and the same colours, yet one still looks far more expensive. Usually it is the type doing the work.

Two posters can share the same layout, the same photo and the same colours, and one of them still looks more expensive. Nine times out of ten the difference is typography, and it comes from a few decisions made before anything is placed on the canvas.

One family, many weights

A single well built typeface with a real weight range will carry a whole brand. Mixing two families is a decision, not a default, and it only works when the two have clearly different jobs. If you cannot explain why the second font is there, delete it.

Fix the scale before the layout

I set five or six sizes and use nothing in between. Random in between sizes are the fastest way to make a clean layout feel amateur, because the eye notices inconsistency long before it reads the words.

Line length beats font size

Text running edge to edge is tiring no matter how beautiful the type is. Roughly sixty to seventy five characters per line keeps a paragraph comfortable. If a headline needs three lines to breathe, give it three lines instead of shrinking it.

Let spacing do the emphasis

Before reaching for bold, colour or uppercase, try more space around the element. Space is quiet, it never fights the brand palette, and it makes the important thing obvious without shouting.

Check it where it will actually live

Type behaves differently on a phone at arm’s length, on a printed card in the hand, and on a screen in a bright office. I export a quick mock in the real context before approving anything, and the fix is usually one step up in size with a little more line height.

None of this is decoration. It is the part of the work clients feel but rarely name, and it is why two designs built from the same ingredients end up worth very different money.
